UPDATE: AMD Releases the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 15.11.1 Update Here
Users are reporting that the latest Crimson driver from AMD is locking their fans at 20%, resulting into busted video cards.
Reddit has a lot of reports from users who are saying that after they had installed the latest Crimson driver, the fan remained locked at 20%. This is usually happening without the knowledge of the user, who finds out when the system crashes. If they’re lucky, the system will reboot, but that’s not always the case. It’s possible for GPU to die in the process, and that makes things a lot more complicated.
Hardware developers are not strangers to these problems, and they did it before. AMD has just launched its new Crimson driver, and they have made a really big deal out of it, but they might have jumped the gun on this one, especially since the reports from the community are still coming.
There is a temporary fix
As usual, the community has come to the rescue. A user has posted a fix on how to change the settings from the drivers, and it’s not terribly complicated, but the downside is that people need to make these changes after each reboot. A lot of users have confirmed the problem, and it’s likely that AMD will be quick to issue an update, but we have to keep in mind that not everyone updates, and the latest version of the Crimson driver will continue to kill GPUs for a while.
AMD Crimson driver replaced the old Catalyst, and the company promised better performance and a completely new user experience. As it turns out, some users are now experiencing life without a GPU or a very hot apartment.
As it stands right now, the AMD community is not very happy, and users have been suggesting that at least AMD pull the download for the driver until this is solved. It should at least ensure that no more users are affected by this really big problem.
It’s important to point out that not all users seem to be affected by the problem, but you should check if you GPU is running too hot.
We are aware of low fan speed reports on select GPUs with Radeon Software Crimson Edition. We intend to publish a hotfix on Monday.

A temporary fix is available, but it doesn’t survive reboot
