Niagara Falls could run dry again. State leaders are considering rehabilitating or replacing the bridges that connect Niagara Falls, Green Island and Goat Island. The bridges are more than 100 years old.
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation at the Department of Transportation put together a proposal in October 2015 explaining three options: maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement.
If the bridges are replaced, the Niagara River will be temporarily dewatered to expose the rock between the American and Bridal Veil Falls. The entire river flow would be directed to Horseshoe Falls.
According to the draft design, the American Rapids as well as the American and Bridal Veil Falls could be exposed five to nine months.
This is still a proposal and the state is asking for public input. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the Niagara Falls Convention Center.
Dewatering has happened before in 1969 when the Army Corps of Engineers took a look at the stability of the American Falls.
